Centre Co., PA (WJAC) — A major court ruling in the proposed State College casino project looks to expedite a lot of the legal issues that have been raised since a license was approved for the casino.
Last week, in what’s termed an extraordinary move, the state Supreme Court basically consolidated the outstanding, casino-related issues into one case that will be argued before the court.
Later this week, a series of arguments were scheduled for a commonwealth court hearing but now, they’ve all been cancelled.
Earlier this year, the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board approved a license for a mini casino to be located at the former Macy’s site, in the Nittany Mall.
A competing casino operator, Stadium Casino LLC, who lost out on the State College site bid, filed multiple suits, challenging the license award, and even the validity of the gaming board issuing the license.
They also raised the issue of further appeals that could delay a final court decision for years.
The Supreme Court decision now avoids what’s was termed "piecemeal litigation," along with using fewer court resources.
Court approval for the casino project is crucial because the license approved cannot be issued until all appeals are resolved.
There's no timetable for a Supreme Court ruling on the issue.
