Cambria County man accused of threatening to gun down officials and evading arrest

A Cambria County man is facing multiple charges, including felonies, after threatening to harm government officials and law enforcement officers, state police say.

According to a criminal complaint, Brandon Shutty, 42, contacted Western Behavioral Health May 30 complaining that he was done with government and law enforcement, and made several references to "gun down" government officials and committing suicide.

State police say Western Behavioral Health issued a 302 warrant for Shutty, saying he was "in need of immediate involuntary inpatient psychiatric treatment in order to prevent further harm or death to himself or others."

The criminal complaint states that attempts were made to contact Shutty at his last known residence and serve the 302 warrant, but he could not be located.

According to state police, Shutty was involved in a domestic incident June 19 in Beaverdale Boro, but fled the scene before police arrived.

State police also say they made contact with Shutty via telephone June 20, but he hung up, not revealing his location.

According to the criminal complaint, state police observed a man walking along State Route 160 near B and W Road in Cambria Township carrying a scoped hunting rifle.

State police say they attempted to stop Shutty after he walked into a construction site, but he made inappropriate gestures at state police and began mumbling under his breath.

The criminal complaint states that state police attempted to initiate an arrest due to Shutty refusing to put down his rifle and cooperate with police.

According to state police, Shutty attempted to steal a vehicle in order to flee the scene, but was apprehended by state police and construction workers.

The criminal complaint states that, during the altercation with Shutty, a state police trooper suffered lacerations to his nose and forearms and that another trooper was injured after crashing his vehicle on his way to the scene.

State police say, in addition to the rifle, which was in the "fire" position, Shutty had a single 30-30 round on his person which was recovered near a construction vehicle, as well as a box of 13 30-30 rounds and a small amount of marijuana.

Online court dockets show that Shutty faces two felony charges of aggravated assault with attempts to cause serious bodily injury to designated individuals, one felony charge of theft by unlawful taking, one charge of resisting arrest and one charge of terroristic threats with intent.

Court dockets also show that Shutty is currently being held at the Cambria County Prison with a preliminary hearing scheduled for July 3.
