Blair County MMA fighter charged with assault

TYRONE TOWNSHIP, Pa.-- A mixed martial arts fighter accused of assaulting a woman. State police said the man tried to run the woman off the road Sunday.

"He was apparently tailgating her and eventually passed her and forced her to stop her vehicle," said Trooper David McGarvey, State Police Hollidaysburg.

Police said Brett Shoenfelt was behind the wheel. They said he is a local amateur mixed martial arts fighter. Police said he knew the victim but it remains unclear why he allegedly attacked her.

"We don't really know what his intention was when he drove her off the road," McGarvey said.

A criminal complaint said when both cars stopped Shoenfelt got out of his car. It said he approached the other car and punched the driver's side window out. Police said he grabbed the woman's neck and took the woman's cellphone, a more serious charge than the assault.

"His most serious charge is robbery because he took her cellphone," McGarvey said.

Police said he also caused nearly $1,000 of damage to the car the woman was driving.

State police say said woman declined to be taken to the hospital. Shoenfelt is facing charges of assault, robbery and more.
